McCallie Sailing Camp is for those who want to learn the skills needed to sail a boat with confidence.

McCallie Sailing Camp is for those who want to learn the skills needed to sail a boat with confidence. Younger campers will sail in an “Opti”. Older campers will sail a Laser. While there is a lot to learn, it’s done in a step-by-step, fun-filled, and encouraging environment. The camp is based at Privateer Yacht Club, a beautiful and scenic site on Lake Chickamauga, just north of the Highway 153 dam. This is a week you won’t want to miss!

Each camper who attends our sailing camp must know how to swim and be comfortable in the water before coming to camp. Part of the sailing experience is being able to “right” one’s overturned boat. Windy conditions make for powerful forces on a small boat, and this can be a fearful experience as one learns to control an Optimist sailboat.

Sailing Camp is not a camp for those who aren’t already swimmers.  Because safety is the foundation of our whole camp, it is imperative that each camper follows our guidelines to the letter. Should we have a problem in this area or another, we will phone the parent and ask that the child be picked up midday.

– Life vest. Type 3 is preferable with three straps across the front. The life vest should fit snugly and not be oversized. Vests must be worn while sailing, swimming, and walking the docks.

– Appropriate footwear. Shoes will get wet several times a day. All footwear should dry easily and quickly, have a closed toe (not sandals) and fit snugly. Aquasocks are highly recommended for sailing camp.

– Towel
– Hat
– Sunglasses
– Sunscreen
– Water bottle that can be carried on the boat

Each camper will receive a Sailing Camp T-shirt. We will provide lunch each day.
