Discover your artistic talent in a “hands on” studio workshop geared for motivated art students with a passion for building with hand tools.

Learn to use real tools!  Working with hand tools such as hammers, drills and different kinds of saws your son or daughter will be creating building projects.  They will learn about the various kinds of tools and how to use them safely.  Campers will build projects such as pinewood derby cars, bird or bat houses, a Lego-look hanging rack, or a wooden organizer caddy.  Regardless of what we create, your child will enjoy building and working with hand-tools.  The class will be held in the fun-filled middle school art studio with lots of room for painting and assembling projects and tools galore.

This camp is designed to familiarize campers with various hand tools used in working with wood.  This will advance their skill for their own fun hobby use, as well as, for household use of hand tools down the road .

About the Directors

Suzanne Mortimer & Scotty Jones

Suzanne has been working since 2009 as McCallie’s Middle School Art Instructor. She has been a member of the Chattanooga Area Art Instructors for 18 years, she is also a member of the Association of Visual Arts in Chattanooga and the Southeast Missouri Arts Council. Suzanne served as the Art Department Chair at McCallie from 2012 – 2014. Suzanne’s personal artwork includes a variety of mediums, including sculpture.  She is passionate about teaching boys and has designed a curriculum at McCallie to include working with tools and new materials to spark the interests of young men.  She has discovered the love kids have for building and using tools in classroom art and is offering this unique summer class to give young people a chance to learn how to properly use tools to create interesting projects.   Suzanne will be teaming up with Scotty Jones, the Middle School Head for the Building with Hand Tools camp.   Mr. Jones will serve as a co-director and will be working right alongside of Suzanne for this week of building and creating.
